Follow the Leader

The Bible tells us about some people who wanted to follow Jesus, but they couldn't quite bring themselves to do it. For some, the problem was the uncertainty. After all, Jesus tells us that "Foxes have dens to life in, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place even to lay his head." Luke 9:58

You see, following Jesus means going wherever he calls you to go...and that place might not be all that comfortable for you. But we need to find our comfort in Jesus himself.

For others, the problem was a desire to do other things AND follow Jesus. But Jesus told these people, "Anyone who puts a hand to the plow and then looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God. Luke 9:62

A field needs to be plowed in straight lines. If you are using a plow and you don't look where you are going, your line is going to be a mess. Jesus wants us to be focused on HIM, not distracted by the world.

To follow Jesus, we have to be willing to give up what we want for ourselves. We have to be willing to go outside our comfort zone. We have to be willing to pour our energy into what he wants us to do. We have to live our lives with him and for him.

Well, let me put it this way. It is NOT because Jesus needs anything from you. It is because Jesus wants you to be his helper.

Following Jesus is a bit like the game Follow the Leader. Jesus is our leader, and we are supposed to do what he does. And when we do, the people following behind us have a better idea of what Jesus is doing because they can see us doing it, too.

So do you want to jump in the line and follow Jesus?

Read Philippians 2:1-11 This passage gives us a beautiful description of why living like Jesus makes a difference. What does it say will happen when we do?

Draw a picture inspired by Philippians 2:1-11. You can focus on one part or the whole thing. Use your creativity to express these words in an image.

Choose a verse from Philippians 2:1-11 and write it down somewhere you will see it often. Read it each time you see it and remember how you can be part of the line leading people to Jesus.
