Every Kind of Food
Last week, I wrote about God's invitation and his gift to us...his invitation to join him in heaven and his gift of Jesus so we can get there. And that story of his invitation from the Bible tells us that heaven will be like a party with plenty of food!
Fortunately, God has given us food since the beginning. He gave us "every seed-bearing plant" and "all the fruit trees" for food...
Then God said, "Look! I have given you every seed-bearing plant throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food. And I have given every green plant as food for all the wild animals, the birds in the sky, and the small animals that scurry along the ground - everything that has life." And that is what happened. Genesis 1:29-30
If you keep reading the Bible, you'll find many other moments when God has provided food for his people. Through Joseph, he provided enough food to last during seven years of poor crops. Through Moses, he provided manna and quail to the Israelites while they traveled to their new home. He gave Boaz a generous heart so that Ruth and Naomi could gather grain from his fields. Through Elijah, he miraculously gave oil and flour to a widow in Zarephath. All of this and more happened long before Jesus arrived on earth and fed thousands with his own hands.
Maybe it seems obvious that God would provide food for people to eat. We need it, after all, and God designed us to need it. But have you ever thought about what it means that God pays attention to our most basic needs?
It means that he cares deeply about the everyday things in our lives.
It is so easy for us to think that God cares only about the big things...or the big people. But he cares about the little things, too. That's because the little things in life are actually the most important ones.
This week, use the discipleship activities below to focus on how God provides food and all the other things we truly need. Thank him for providing, and let him show you how you can share his generosity with others.
Choose one or more of the following to read...
Genesis 41:1-36 (God provides through Joseph)
Exodus 16:1-36 (God provides manna and quail)
Ruth 2:1-23 (God provides grain for Ruth and Naomi)
1 Kings 17:8-16 (God provides flour and oil for a widow)
How does God provide food in the passage you chose?
How does God provide food for you and your family?
Help prepare a snack or meal this week. Pay attention to the ingredients, how they need to be prepared, how they are combined, and how much they change in the process of getting them ready to eat. Thank God for his ingenious design of every food he has given us...and enjoy what he has provided!
Figure out a way you can help people who struggle to have enough food in your community. You might be able to collect and donate canned goods to a local food pantry. Or, you might be able to help prepare or serve a meal run by a church or community group that offers free meals to the hungry. Remember that God often provides food through the hands of ordinary people...and that you can be his hands when you help feed others.
